Housing Programs

Veterans Leadership Program has been a leader in providing transitional and long term housing to the veterans of Western Pennsylvania.

Because of our six housing programs, we are able to meet the diverse needs of our homeless veteran population. VLP case managers have developed close working relationships with many real estate agents and landlords through the local area who are familiar with the agency's programs and clients. Through these relationships, case managers stay informed about apartments available that fit the needs of our clients.

Housing consists of scattered site apartments located in safe neighborhoods, close to community amenities and transportation. The number of bedrooms will be decided on an individual basis depending upon the number of dependent family members who will live with the veteran. VLP case managers will work with each client to secure an apartment that meets the client's needs in regard to their disabilities and individual circumstances. Clients with physical disabilities will secure handicap-accessible units. One of the benefits of scattered site leased housing is that the clients are easily able to integrate into the community and interact with their community neighbors.

Once clients have obtained an apartment, case managers continue to assist the client with life skills training to provide him with basic instruction in day-to-day living. This training will be conducted in one-on-one and group sessions. Recovery will be a major topic of discussion, with VLP case managers providing both information and support. Housing discrimination, tenant's rights and understanding rental/lease agreements will also be addressed. Managing a personal budget, dealing with stress, and personal grooming are equally important issues that will be discussed regularly. Evening support groups will provide veterans with the necessary ongoing counseling to successfully deal with concerns relating to addictions, family issues, job placement, reintegration, and independent living.
